Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said that there is a need to increase the per acre yield of soybean to achieve the goal of making the country self-reliant in the production of edible oils. While addressing the seventh International Soybean Convention in Indore through video conference, Gadkari said, there is a great need to increase the per acre productivity of soybean to make the country self-reliant in edible oils.
Along with this, we also need to reduce the cost of farming. India imports about 60 percent of its edible oil requirement. The Union Minister referred to the large-scale import of palm oil into India from Indonesia and Malaysia and said that dependence on this import can be reduced by promoting soybean cultivation and edible oil production on the domestic front.
He said that the government is taking various steps through the National Edible Oil Mission to increase the production of soybean in the country, which includes the development of improved seeds of this oilseed crop. Gadkari expressed confidence that with the joint efforts of the government and the industry, the country will continuously move towards achieving the goal of becoming self-reliant in the production of edible oils. The International Soybean Convention organized by Indore-based Soybean Processors Association of India (SOPA) started from Sunday. More than 800 people are participating in this two-day program.
