The Electoral Reforms Commission is considering summoning three former Chief Election Commissioners for 'conducting controversial elections'. They are also thinking of recommending that electoral offenses apply to those three commissions—noting that electoral offenses may apply to them.
After the meeting with the media editors on Thursday (November 21), the head of the Electoral System Reform Commission said such a plan. Badiul Alam Majumdar.
Badiul Alam Majumder said in response to the questions of the journalists whether the last three commissions will be called the reform commission, whether they will listen to the irregularities that have happened during their time, 'We have discussed the previous three commissions. We are reviewing again. Electoral offenses may apply to them. And so that it does not happen in the future, we have also reviewed it. The media also investigates the irregularities in the last three elections, why they could not hold a fair election. We are also trying to collect information. After reviewing the last three elections, we will propose that lesson.
Sujan editor Badiul Alam Majumder said in response to the question why the last three commissions could not hold fair elections, will you call them and ask them, 'Will they come? I don't think so. We will take it into consideration.'
Meanwhile, after the meeting with the reform commission, senior journalist Golam Mortoza said, 'If we want to do well in the upcoming elections and if we want to learn from the previous experience, then the three previous commissions need to sit down with the heads and know the real information. The media editors who said the election went well, called them and asked them why they said the election went well. We need to know from them why they justified poor elections or no voter polls, night polls. There should be a recommendation of greater punishment due to electoral offences. In 2014, Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmed wanted to know why the commission held elections without voters. What instructions did the government give him? In 2018, Nurul Huda wants to know the context in which the Commission conducted the night voting. Besides, Kazi Habibul Awal wants to know from the Commission why the number of voters has increased in the 2024 elections. Give your recommendations in the light of knowing these things. And there needs to be a recommendation that those who committed electoral crimes in the past should be brought to justice.
