Punjab News: About 63.91 percent voting took place in the by-elections held on Wednesday for four assembly seats of Punjab, in which Giddarbaha seat recorded the highest voter turnout of 81.90 percent. Officials gave this information on Thursday. Voting was held on Wednesday for the by-elections of Giddarbaha, Dera Baba Nanak, Chabbewal (reserved) and Barnala assembly constituencies of the state. By-elections on these seats became necessary after the sitting MLAs were elected to the Lok Sabha.

Maximum voting took place in 4 areas of Punjab

According to officials, there are a total of 6.96 lakh voters in these four assembly constituencies, out of which 4.45 lakh voters, including 2.15 lakh women, voted. He said that 81.90 percent voting took place in Giddarbaha, 64.01 percent in Dera Baba, 56.34 percent in Barnala and 53.43 percent in Chabbewal. It is noteworthy that in the 2022 assembly elections, there was 84.93 percent voting in Giddarbaha, 73.70 percent in Dera Baba Nanak, 71.45 percent in Barnala and 71.19 percent in Chabbewal.

Competition between veterans in by-elections

The main contest in the by-election was between Aam Aadmi Party, Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Shiromani Akali Dal did not contest the elections. Prominent candidates in the fray include former Punjab Finance Minister Manpreet Singh Badal, Kewal Singh Dhillon, Sohan Singh Thandal and Ravikaran Singh Kahlon (BJP), Amrita Wadding and Jatinder Kaur (Congress) and Hardeep Singh Dimpy Dhillon and Ishank Kumar Chabbewal (AAP). Are included. Amrita is the wife of Punjab Congress chief and Ludhiana MP Amarinder Singh Raja Wadding. Jatinder Kaur is the wife of Gurdaspur MP and former Deputy Chief Minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa.

AAP currently has 91 MLAs in the 117-member Punjab Assembly, while Congress has 15, Shiromani Akali Dal has three, BJP has two and Bahujan Samaj Party has one. There is also an independent MLA.
