Fires are more common in winter: Fire Service

Director of Fire Service and Civil Defense Directorate (Operation and Maintenance) Lt. Colonel Mohammad Tajul Islam Chowdhury.

He said this at the fire safety and first aid training workshop for members of Dhaka Reporters Unity on Tuesday (November 19).

Tajul Islam Chowdhury said that in winter the weather is cold and there is fog. Even so, fire incidents occur more often in winter. Because winter cold or fog does not play a special role in preventing fire. Conversely, dry weather causes fires to spread quickly. Citizen awareness is more needed to reduce the incidence of fire. Due to lack of awareness, fire incidents occur more often.

He also said that fire fighters are always ready. The fire service personnel left for the spot within 30 seconds of receiving the news of the fire in the fire control room. Due to traffic congestion, fire service vehicles are often delayed in reaching the spot.

Saleh Uddin, Deputy Director of Dhaka Division of Fire Service, said that almost all canals, sewers, ponds and lakes in Dhaka city have been filled. Most of the buildings do not have any water supply system. Many times the fire becomes difficult to control due to lack of water.

40 members of Dhaka Reporters Unit participated in the workshop conducted by fire service media chief and trainer Shahjahan Shikder. The day-long workshop teaches hands-on fire causes, control methods and techniques.

At this time, the joint secretary of DRU. Mizanur Rahman said that fire incidents can be reduced to a large extent through awareness. And for awareness, it is necessary to hold seminars in the district, upazila. He urged the fire service to be more active in this regard.

Information Technology and Training Secretary of DRU Rashim Mollah said, DRU is the largest organization among professional journalists. He called for the training of journalists from all districts and upazilas of the country, including all members of DRU, to increase awareness about fire.

Among others in the workshop, DRU Office Secretary Rafiq Rafi, Women Affairs Secretary Mahmuda Dolly, Publicity and Publication Secretary Sushant Saha, Sports Secretary Md. Mahbubur Rahman, welfare secretary Tanvir Ahmed, executive member Saeed Shipon, Delwar Hossain Mohin and Md. Shariful Islam was present.
