AI chatbot will analyze complex data from NASA satellites

The American space agency NASA has collected a large amount of data or information about the Earth using observation satellites for many years. In particular, the satellites collect more information, including climate change, wildfires and weather. However, analyzing such a large amount of data is time-consuming and laborious. Therefore, NASA will use artificial intelligence or AI chatbots to analyze the data and deliver it easily to the public.

NASA has teamed up with Microsoft to develop 'Earth Copilot' chatbot using generative AI technology. The new AI-based chat tool is specially designed to simplify the process of accessing geospatial satellite images and data. Scientists and students will benefit from using it.

Currently only certain researchers and scientists can make sense of this data. But Earth Copilot will deliver information to countless users. Interested parties can interact with the tool by simply asking questions. The issue is similar to using ChatGPT or other generative-AI chat tools.

Microsoft believes that users can easily question it. For example: 'What was the impact of Hurricane Ian on Sanibel Island?' or 'How has the Covid-19 pandemic affected US air quality?'. Earth CoPilot will then delve into the relevant data sets and provide answers. These answers are easier to understand than the data.

NASA's 'Earth Science Data System Program' collects vast amounts of data from sensors and instruments in space. This data includes everything from atmospheric location to land changes, ocean temperatures and more, Microsoft says of the chatbot. But the sheer volume and complexity of this information can become confusing at times. Not everyone has the skills to navigate technical interfaces to understand these data, understand data formats and master the complexities of geospatial analysis. AI can simplify this process. Gain insight from real-world data in seconds.

The chatbot is currently being tested by NASA scientists and researchers to ensure its safety and reliability.

This chatbot will make it easy for users to search, discover and analyze Earth related data.
