Beginning with Rakhal dance, Bivor Rasa festival with night-long leela


The biggest religious and traditional Maharasalila festival of the Manipuri community has started with Rakhal dance in Kamalganj of Moulvibazar.

The festival started on Friday (November 15) at noon at Shibbazar open stage in Madhavpur of the upazila with drums, shells and conchs playing around the Leela of Lord Krishna and his friend Radha. At 11:30 PM, Maharasalila, the essence of rasa, was held at Jora Mandapam. This dance continues till dawn. In this, the artistes brought out the story of Krishna's Madhurlila with the gopis in song and melody.

This time the 182nd Ras Utsav is being held at Madhavpur Jora Mandap. And the 42nd Rasotsav is being held in Adampur of Kamalganj organized by the Manipuri Maitai community. Rasotsav is attended by thousands of people including people from the Manipuri community as well as foreign tourists.

Men and women, children and teenagers, poets and writers, journalists, local and foreign tourists and senior officials of the administration gathered to enjoy the joy of Maharatri. The mandap premises of Madhavpur and Adampur became lively with their footsteps.

The mandaps of Madhavpur and Adampur are decorated with elaborate crafts of white paper designs around the festival of Ras. Lighting is also done. This festival turns into a grand gathering of Manipuri culture.

Raas festival begins on Friday afternoon with Rakhal dance. On the occasion of Maharaslila, Shibbazar Jora Mandap of Madhavpur Union of upazila is full of visitors from all over the country to see the Maharaslila. People from all walks of life are announcing the festival with colorful clothes and the sound of musical instruments. Manipuri textile exhibition and fair is held on the occasion of Raas festival. Besides, the law and order forces are working to celebrate the festival peacefully.

Organizers of Ras Utsav said that Maha-Raslila started at noon with Gosthlila or shepherd dance. This shepherd dance continues till dusk. Krishna's son Bela is presented as a cowherd in Gosthalila. At 11 pm the Maharasalila dance or Maha-rasalilaanusaran of Sri Sri Krishna begins. This dance continues till dawn.

General Secretary of Maharasalila Seva Sangh Shyam Singh said, Ras festival is not only for Manipuris, thousands of visitors come from all over the country to watch Ras. Every Manipuri family prepares for a month around this festival.
