BNP wants to stop the Prime Minister from becoming a dictator: Tariq Rahman

If the BNP comes to power, arrangements will be made to ensure that no person including the Prime Minister can misuse the power, said Tariq Rahman, acting chairman of the party. He said, 'We want to make sure that in our future Bangladesh, no person, even the prime minister, can become a dictator and misuse power.'

He said these things in a seminar at Lakeshore Hotel in Gulshan of the capital on Thursday afternoon. BNP organized this seminar titled 'State Structure Repair Outline: Reforms in the Light of 31 Points'.

Tariq Rahman said, 'If BNP gets the responsibility of running the state, we want to ensure the freedom of opinion of every citizen regardless of party affiliation. We will try our best to ensure freedom of expression of human rights, human rights activists, social workers and journalists.' He also promised to eradicate the culture of disappearance and murder if the party comes to power.

Promising to introduce a bicameral parliamentary system, Tariq Rahman said, 'To ensure that the dictatorial system does not repeat itself in Bangladesh, the BNP wants to have such a provision in the constitution that no one can be prime minister for more than two consecutive terms. We want balance of power between legislative, judicial and executive branches. I want to introduce a bicameral parliamentary system to ensure the representation and participation of the intellectuals of the society in the management of the state.

Regarding the reforms, Tariq Rahman said, 'Currently, almost all reform proposals discussed in the country are included in our 31 points. By the purpose of reform I mean that reform will change not a few sentences of the Constitution, but the fortunes of the people; That is, a person's income will be arranged, his and his family's socio-economic security and savings will be ensured. I mean by reforms that will solve the problem of unemployment of every man and woman through employment. Reforms that will ensure respect, freedom and empowerment of women.'

He further said, 'Our aim is employment of young unemployed people. And introduction of unemployment allowance according to eligibility until employment is found. We want to ensure women's participation at all levels, grassroots empowerment and once again the implementation of the historic canal cutting programme.'

The Acting Chairman of BNP said that there is an opportunity to add and remove the announced 31 points, “31 points can be added, removed, rearranged or changed to adapt to the environment, situation, needs of the country and the needs of the people. With time, these 31 points will one day open the door to achieve our long-term goal of a happy and self-reliant Bangladesh.'
