The United States has emphasized on protecting freedom of expression, peaceful assembly and association in Bangladesh. US State Department Deputy Spokesperson Vedanta Patel said on Tuesday (November 12) that ensuring the freedom of dissident and oppositional voices is essential for a democratic future.
Protecting these freedoms for all Bangladeshis is critical to ensuring a truly democratic future, Patel said at a regular US State Department briefing.
He also said that the United States has regularly conveyed this support to all its partner countries, especially the interim government of Bangladesh.
When asked about the cancellation of the accreditation card of Bangladesh newspapers, Patel said that he has not seen the details yet. However, if such a move is true, it will be sad, he said.
Patel also said that an active and independent media is essential to monitor any situation. Which also applies to the current situation in Bangladesh.
Stating that media freedom is very important for US President Joe Biden and the Secretary of State, he said, “We want to ensure that the rights and freedoms of all journalists are properly respected.”
