Bangladesh has called an international tender to buy another 50 thousand tons of wheat. Quoting European businessmen, various international media reports said that the tender must be submitted by November 25. These wheats will be released at Chittagong and Mongla ports in Bangladesh.
In recent weeks, Bangladesh has stepped up purchases of imported wheat to compensate for losses in flood-damaged rice. In continuation of that, the Bangladesh Food Directorate has announced a tender for the purchase of Bangladeshi wheat. According to the announcement of the new tender, out of 50,000 tonnes of wheat, 30,000 tonnes will be unloaded at Chittagong port and the remaining 20,000 tonnes will be unloaded at Mongla port.
Earlier, Bangladesh had invited tenders for buying 50 thousand tonnes of wheat. At that time, the deadline for submitting tenders was November 7. But there was no news that Bangladesh bought wheat in that tender.
This year, rice production has been disrupted due to floods in various parts of the country. The Ministry of Agriculture of Bangladesh said that rice production has been greatly damaged due to floods this year. In the eastern and northern parts of the country, about 1.1 million metric tons of paddy has been destroyed due to floods.
And for this reason, the government has decided to import 5 lakh metric tons of rice quickly, said an official of the ministry on condition of anonymity. Soon the private sector will be allowed to import this rice.
Meanwhile, Russian official data says that Bangladesh has imported 2.7 million tons of wheat from the country in the first 9 months of this year. Which makes Bangladesh the third top importer of Russian wheat.
Russian news agency Interfax quoted the agricultural export department of the country's Ministry of Agriculture as saying that Russia exported about 2.7 million or 2.7 million tons of wheat to Bangladesh in the first 9 months of 2024. Last year, Russia exported 1.9 lakh tonnes of wheat to Bangladesh. That is, the amount of wheat Bangladesh has imported so far this year is 42 times more than the same period last year.
Bangladesh is one of the export destinations of Russian wheat. In this regard, the Agricultural Export Department of the Russian Ministry of Agriculture said at the 'Russian Crop Production Conference' held in Moscow on Thursday, 'Bangladesh is among the top three importers of Russian wheat in 2024. Egypt ranks first and Türkiye ranks second in terms of Russian wheat imports.
According to data from the Russian Grain Union, wheat exports to Bangladesh decreased by 16.5 percent to 1.343 million tons from the beginning of the 2024 agricultural year (July 1, 2024) to October 20. Whereas Bangladesh bought 1.608 million tons of wheat from Russia during the same period last year.
