Residents of Bangladesh complain that women were taunted earlier if they did not wear hijab or headscarf. But they also claim that after the interim government came to power, such incidents are becoming more visible. On social media, women are also highlighting incidents of being harassed for not wearing a veil or head cloth. Writer Taslima Nasreen also criticized this.
Women advisers to the government of Bangladesh do not wear hijab. He has highlighted this on social media. Taslima wrote, 'There is one thing I like about this government. That is, women-counselors do not wear veils on their heads, or hijab.' So many people have raised the question why ordinary women will be harassed for this.
Those who had to be harassed because of this said, 'Such incidents have happened before. But earlier I protested it. I am afraid to protest now.' They also claimed that the issue of insulting women has now increased to a circle. A few days ago, Maisha Mahzabeen wanted to know on Facebook whether 'catcalling' has increased on the streets. There, women wrote about their experiences of being harassed recently because of their clothes.
ABM Nazmus Shakib, assistant professor of criminology department of Dhaka University, thinks that concerted steps should be taken to reduce such incidents. Adviser to the Interim Government's Ministry of Women and Child Affairs has acknowledged that women are being harassed on the streets. He assured that initiatives will be taken to prevent such incidents.
