Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has confirmed the death of Hashem Saffieddin, the successor to Hezbollah Chief Hassan Nasrallah. According to the news of Times of Israel, Saffieddin was killed in an airstrike in Beirut on Thursday last week.

Before Netanyahu, Defense Minister Yoav Galant had also claimed his death last evening. After Hezbollah chief Nasrallah was killed in an Israeli strike on September 27, Saffieddin was considered a leading contender for the next chief.

He was made the head of the Executive Council of Hezbollah for the last 30 years. Saffieddin was currently a member of Hezbollah's Executive Council and a cousin of Hassan Nasrallah.

Saifidin joined Hezbollah in 1990

Saffieddine was born in 1964 in the city of Der Qanun al-Nahar, Lebanon. Both Saifieddin and Nasrallah have received religious education together. Both of them studied together in major Shia education centers like Qoum in Iran and Najaf in Iraq.

Both were recalled from Iran during Islamic studies in the 1990s. Both Nasrallah and Saffiedine joined Hezbollah in its early days. In 1994, Saffieddin was made the head of Hezbollah's Executive Council.

For the last three decades, Saifieddin had been looking after matters like funding of Hezbollah and education of the organization. Whereas Nasrallah looked after the strategic matters of the organization.

Just two years after Nasrallah became Hezbollah chief, Saffieddin was also made the head of the organization's Executive Council.

Nasrallah was killed last month Nasrallah was killed in an Israeli attack on September 27. Israel attacked Hezbollah's headquarters in Beirut with an 80-ton bomb. Hezbollah confirmed Nasrallah's death at 5 pm on Saturday, about 20 hours after the attack on Friday.
