Patil's revelation after serious defeat, what should a coach be like, why Chappell-Kumble failed, who was the ideal…

Mumbai. After the historic defeat from New Zealand, along with the Indian players, coach Gautam Gambhir is also on target. People are raising questions on the superpowers he got. Meanwhile, Sandeep Patil, who was a member of the 1983 world champion team, told what a coach should be like. Sandeep Patil believes that John Wright was successful as the Indian coach because he gave free rein to the players whereas Greg Chappell and Anil Kumble failed to do so.

The autobiography of former selection committee chairman Sandeep Patil 'Beyond Boundaries' was released on Wednesday. Sandeep Patil has seen the tumultuous Chappell era from close as he used to attend selection and board meetings as the then coach of India A in those days.

Sandeep Patil has written, 'The trend of hiring foreign coaches and support staff started in India after 2000. This brought great benefits, because India's foreign record has continuously improved. It all started with John Wright becoming India's first foreign coach. He has written, 'I think John was the ideal coach for India. He was soft-spoken, polite and well-mannered. Always kept to himself and was happy living under the shadow of Sourav Ganguly. He was rarely in the news. Greg Chappell was the opposite. He was in the news every day.

Sandeep Patil believes that for John Wright, every player was equal and for him the team was paramount. He has written in his book, 'During Wright's tenure there was no such thing as senior or junior. This was a team. He believed that all senior players are leaders in some way or the other. He respected him and gave him free rein. I think Anil Kumble could not do this and Greg Chappell too. (input language)
