Donald Trump's return to the White House is now confirmed. He has promised to take effective action on a range of issues, including immigration, the economy and the Ukraine war. After being elected for a second term, Trump is going to wield unprecedented power as president. Because, his party won the majority in both houses of the US Parliament Congress.
In his victory speech on Wednesday, Trump said, 'I will govern with a simple mantra. I will keep my promises.' But he did not elaborate on how he would achieve his objective.
Earlier, in a 2023 interview with Fox News, he was asked if he would abuse power or target political opponents. He replied, 'No, no, no. But except the first day! On day one, we will close the border and begin extracting oil. Next, I want to say one thing—I am not a dictator.'
Trump made various promises during the campaign to run for a second term after serving his first term. Out of these 7 promises he has set a target to implement on a priority basis. The British media BBC published a report on those priority tasks.
1. Deporting undocumented immigrants from the United States
During the election campaign, Donald Trump promised to deport the 'largest population of illegal immigrants' in US history. He also pledged to complete construction of a wall along the Mexican border that had begun during his first term.
Under the Biden-Harris administration, intrusions at the US southern border reached record highs at the end of last year. But in 2024 it comes down. Analysts told the BBC that deporting such a large number of migrants as promised by Trump would face legal and logistical challenges. This could slow the growth of the US economy.
2. Economic Reforms, Taxation and Customs Sector
According to various polls back at the booth, the economy was an important issue for voters in this election. Trump has promised to end inflation. U.S. inflation reached record highs under Joe Biden, though it has since declined. It is not yet certain whether Trump will be able to control this issue or not. This is because a president's ability to directly influence the inflationary sector is limited.
Donald Trump proposed massive tax cuts through an extension of the 2017 tax reform. He proposed eliminating the tax on bonds proposed by the U.S. Treasury, eliminating the Social Security spending tax, and cutting corporate taxes.
Apart from this, he has proposed new tariffs of at least 10 percent on foreign goods to reduce the trade deficit. He also said to impose a tariff of up to 60 percent on imports from China. But some economists have warned that such a move could increase commodity prices for the common man.
3. Repeal or reform climate policy
Donald Trump repealed hundreds of environmental protection laws during his first term and became the first country to withdraw America from international agreements such as the Paris Climate Agreement. This time too he promised to relax environmental laws.
Basically, he is going to take this initiative to help the American car industry. He has repeatedly attacked the electric car industry and vowed to roll back policies the Biden administration had taken on the green car industry.
Trump has promised to increase US fossil fuel production. He has little interest in renewable energy sources such as windmills. He wants to allow oil drilling in places like the Arctic. According to him, this will help reduce fuel prices, although analysts are skeptical.
4. Stop the war in Ukraine
He criticized the billions of dollars that the United States is spending on behalf of Kiev in the Ukraine-Russia war. He promised to end the war 'within 24 hours' through negotiations. But did not give any details on how this will be achieved. But Democrats say Trump's move will further encourage Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Trump wants to reduce US involvement in foreign conflicts. Trump has portrayed himself as a staunch supporter of Israel over the Gaza war. But he called on US allies to stop military operations. He also promised an end to violence in Lebanon. However, he did not clarify what steps he would take for this.
5. The issue of banning abortion
Trump, speaking opposite Kamala Harris at the presidential debate, said he would not sign a national abortion ban if he were president, despite objections from some of his supporters. In 2022, the US Supreme Court struck down constitutional rights to abortion.
Abortion rights were a key campaign issue for Kamala Harris, and several states voted for or against preserving or expanding abortion rights on Election Day. Trump himself has repeatedly said that states should have the freedom to make their own laws on abortion.
6. Some accused in Capitol Hill riots acquitted
Donald Trump has said he will 'exonerate' some of those convicted in the January 6, 2021 attack on Capitol Hill in Washington. Through that attack, his supporters tried to change the outcome of the 2020 presidential election. Joe Biden won that election.
Trump has been blamed for some of the deaths in the violence of the attack. Trump is alleged to have instigated the attack. He is trying to play down the seriousness of the attack and prove that hundreds of convicted supporters are political prisoners. Still, he claims, many of them are 'not criminals', although he admits that some may indeed have gone out of control.
7. Firing Special Counsel Jack Smith
Trump has vowed to fire Jack Smith, the attorney who handled the two cases against him, “within two seconds” of taking office. Special counsel Jack Smith has brought two separate indictments against Trump, accusing him of trying to overturn the results of the 2020 election and mishandling classified information.
But Trump has denied the allegations and has tried to prevent the two cases from going to trial before the election. He said Smith tried to turn him into a 'political victim'. Trump will become the first US president to be charged with a crime after he was convicted in New York of falsifying business documents.
