The International Internet Gateway Association of Bangladesh (IIGAB) has proposed to the Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) to reduce the cost of internet. If this initiative is implemented, the Internet prices will decrease, IIG sector officials believe.
The organization (IIGAB) sent this letter to BTRC on October 29.
Stakeholders say that if IGAB's proposed reduction in bandwidth prices, ISPs will be able to reduce Tk 50-75 per mega bandwidth (in different slabs) or keep less from customers. This will reduce the internet cost of the customer.
Earlier, on November 4, a round table meeting on 'Importance of Telecommunication Networks to Face Future Challenges' organized by Telecom and Technology Reporters Network of Bangladesh (TRNB) was held at a hotel in Tejgaon of the capital. In the speech of the chief guest, BTRC Chairman Major General (Retd.) Emdad-ul Bari said that the government is working to reduce the price of internet.
He said, the price of internet should be the price of water. To expand digital services, the cost of internet must be reduced, which is what BTRC is working on. If government as well as private institutions take initiative, reducing the cost of bandwidth can be easier.
When asked about this, IIGAB President Aminul Hakim said, 'This initiative of ours is to increase the rate of internet usage and reach the marginal level of internet and increase users. The current government also wants to reduce the price of internet. As a result, we have also taken initiative with the government. If this initiative is implemented, the cost of internet will come down. Users will be able to use the internet at affordable rates.'
Industry insiders say that the price at which bandwidth (in different slabs) is being sold in the IIG sector has been fixed in 2021. More than 3 years have passed. Bandwidth is still being sold at that price. This price is under review. Price review will reduce internet prices.
