On the first day of 2025, i.e. from January 1, Switzerland will implement a ban on clothing that covers the face, including the burqa. Reuters reported this news on Wednesday citing the country's government.
According to the report, in a referendum held in Switzerland in 2021, the people of the country decided against wearing the burqa. Later, a law was passed banning the burqa in the country. However, many Muslim organizations have condemned this law. Earlier in 2009, the same process imposed a ban on the construction of new minarets in the country.
Switzerland's governing federal council issued a statement on Wednesday regarding the latest burqa ban. It has been said that a decision has been taken regarding when this ban will be implemented. Anyone who violates this law will be fined 1,000 Swiss Francs. According to the value of Bangladeshi currency, which is more than 1 lakh 36 thousand taka.
The Swiss government also said the burqa ban would not apply to planes or any diplomatic and consular premises. In places of worship and other holy places, one can choose to cover the face.
The statement also said that only face coverings will be permitted for reasons of health and safety, local customs or weather conditions. It will also be allowed in the case of artistic presentation and entertainment and advertisement. As well as freedom of expression and personal protection in gatherings, one may choose to wear face coverings subject to permission.
