Admitting that the prices of various products including eggs have increased in the market, Finance and Trade Advisor Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed said, eggs are not a product like chocolate that can be made quickly in a factory. Supply-constraints are the major reason for the rise in egg prices. Our daily requirement of eggs is about four and a half crore pieces. Earlier, about 4-5 million eggs were produced per day. At present there is no more than three crore production. Now, should I make the eggs with a machine or not?
He said this in response to questions from reporters after inspecting the supply and bargaining conditions of daily commodities at Kawran Bazar in the capital on Monday (October 14) evening.
The advisor said, it is correct, talking about the syndicate will not get through. However, efforts are being made to increase the supply of products in the market and reduce the price.
Stating that they are working on how to overcome the egg supply crisis, the trade advisor said, we have already sat with the big egg traders. Will sit again with concerned people this week. Besides, import of eggs from India is also allowed. We are trying to normalize the egg market.
He also said that information is being spread in such a way that Bangladesh has become like an African country. Many are trying to say that nothing is available, everything is going up in price. These messages create fear among low-income people.
In order to keep the prices of daily necessities including eggs, broiler chickens, vegetables, potatoes, pulses, onions, garlic, ginger and edible oil stable and supply normal. Salehuddin Ahmed visited Kawran Bazar around 5 pm on Monday. Market surveillance activities were conducted during this time. Secretary of Commerce Ministry Salim Uddin and Director General of National Consumer Rights Protection Department Mohammad Alim Akhtar Khan along with other officials of the department, representatives of various departments and organizations were present.
At this time, the trade advisor wants to know the information about the supply situation of daily necessities from the traders. He said, due to natural calamities such as floods, heavy rains etc., the production of some products, including vegetables, has been lost along with the decrease in egg production. As a result, due to some shortfall in the supply chain, the prices of these products have increased slightly. He requested the businessmen to do business with reasonable profit.
The advisor also said that the task force is monitoring to ensure that the price gap between manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers remains at a tolerable level. Any increase in price due to excessive profit or opportunity will be strongly resisted.
