In the last month, there have been multiple deaths due to mass beatings in Bangladesh. A similar incident happened there on Tuesday. But this time a teacher was beaten to death. According to police and administration sources of Khagrachari, Khagrachari Technical School Instructor (Building Maintenance) and department head teacher Abul Hasnat Mohammad Sohail Rana was beaten to death there.
Alleging that the teacher had raped a student of that school, the local residents beat him up. Because of that the teacher died. After this, there started a conflict between Paharis and Bengalis.
District Magistrate of Khagrachari said that due to this incident and to avoid unpleasant situation, section 144 has been issued in the district headquarters. He also said that additional police and security forces have been deployed with Section 144 being issued for an indefinite period from Tuesday afternoon.
Locals said that Sohail went to jail in 2017 for raping a hill woman. Recently he was discharged and joined the workplace again. On Tuesday morning, word got out there that a hillbilly woman had been abducted. The Bengalis of the technical area have picked up the woman and it is said on social media. After that the Paharis entered the school and beat the teacher to death.
Abdul Baten Mridha, OC of Khagrachari Sadar Police Station, said that the hill students had been demanding the withdrawal of Sohail Rana for quite some time. A few years ago, a case was filed against the teacher for sexually harassing a girl student. The student came to the court and testified that Pahari filed the case under the pressure of an organization. Then Sohail got discharged and joined the service.
After this, he was accused of sexually harassing female students. On this day, Sohail was beaten up on the charge of raping a student there. That is why he died. After that, the conflict between the two sides started there. While trying to stop it, some people including the Additional Superintendent of Police were injured. Last month, Pahar became turbulent after a man was beaten to death in Khagragachi on suspicion of being a thief. Due to this, the administration issued Section 144 in Khagrachari and Rangamati districts of Chittagong Hill Tracts.
