The United States made a veiled threat to Iran in the Security Council meeting. They warned Tehran on Monday (October 28) that any aggressive action against Israel or US troops stationed in the Middle East would face serious consequences for Iran. British news agency Reuters reported this.
US Permanent Representative to the United Nations Linda Thomas Greenfield said, 'The US administration will not hesitate to take action in self-defense. There should be no doubt about this. We believe that direct conflict between Israel and Iran should end now. The United States does not want to see more instability in the Middle East.'
At the beginning of this month, Iran attacked Israel with about 200 missiles. In response, Israel launched a massive attack on Iran's missile factory and other important targets early Saturday morning. It was in this context that the meeting was called by the Security Council.
Iran's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Amir Seyed Eravani, has slammed the US as their 'ally' for providing military aid to Israel. He said, 'Iran always welcomes diplomatic solutions. But as a sovereign state we have the right to respond appropriately to any attack.'
Israeli Permanent Representative Danny Danon again made a very aggressive claim. He called on the Security Council to impose severe sanctions that would cripple Iran's military and economic infrastructure. Claiming that the level of Israeli attack on Iran was appropriate, he said, they will not hesitate to take any step in self-defense.
He also said, Israel does not want war. But if a threat comes, the adversary has to suffer specific consequences for it.
