DGCA on Monday issued an advisory to Indian airlines using Boeing 737 aircraft in their fleet regarding the possible risk of rudder jamming. This step has been taken after the recent investigation report of the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).

New Delhi. Aviation regulator DGCA on Monday issued an advisory to Indian airlines using Boeing 737 aircraft in their fleet regarding the possible risk of rudder jamming. This step has been taken after the recent investigation report of the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). That report raised safety concerns related to Boeing-737 aircraft equipped with the Collins Aerospace SVO-730 direction control system.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has issued safety recommendations for domestic airlines in view of the potential risk of jamming of the rudder control system. Currently, Boeing-737 aircraft are being used by Air India Express, Akasa Air and SpiceJet airlines. DGCA said that a circular/advisory should be issued to all flight crews regarding the possibility of jamming or restriction of the direction control system. “Crew members should be briefed on appropriate steps to help them identify and handle such a situation,” the aviation regulator said.

Additionally, all airlines have been asked to conduct a safety risk assessment for the aircraft to evaluate and mitigate the risks associated with the direction control system. DGCA said, “Airlines have been directed to include activities related to handling situations related to jamming or jamming of rudder system in their training and proficiency testing.” The regulator said that the interim measures will be taken. The objective is to enhance air travel safety and ensure that flight crews are well prepared to effectively deal with direction control issues.
