Domestic passenger vehicle wholesales by Indian automakers rose 4.4 percent in April. In comparison to last year, in April this year, automobile companies sold around 3,53,000 vehicles. Industry sources told Business Standard that bulk sales of passenger vehicles were boosted by strong SUV sales and sustained rural demand.
Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) emerged as the second largest carmaker in terms of domestic vehicle wholesales in April. The company left behind the giants Hyundai and Tata Motors in March. The company sold 52,330 vehicles in April this year, which is 27.6 percent more than April last year. Mahindra & Mahindra’s Vehicle Division President Vijay Nakra said that the main reason for this strong performance in April is the continued strong momentum from last year. Mahindra & Mahindra’s portfolio mainly includes SUVs.
At the same time, in April, Hyundai Motor India’s wholesale sales of domestic passenger vehicles recorded a decline of 11.6 percent compared to a year ago. During the period under review, the company sold 44,374 vehicles. Tata Motors also witnessed a 5.6 percent decline in wholesale sales of passenger vehicles and the company sold 45,199 vehicles in April.
Hyundai Chief Operating Officer Tarun Garg said the domestic market is facing challenges due to various macroeconomic reasons and the company continued to focus entirely on exports. As a result, exports witnessed a strong growth of 21.5 per cent in April to 16,400 vehicles.
Domestic wholesale sales of the country’s largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki increased marginally by 0.5 per cent in April compared to a year ago and the company sold 1,38,704 vehicles. Like Mahindra, Toyota Kirloskar Motor also witnessed good sales in April. Toyota Kirloskar Motor sold 24,833 vehicles in April, which is 32.8 percent more than the same period last year. At the same time, in April, Kia India’s domestic wholesale sales increased by 18.3 percent and the company sold 23,623 vehicles.
