Fascism gone but democracy not restored: Nazrul Islam Khan

BNP Standing Committee member Nazrul Islam Khan said that fascism is gone, but democracy has not yet been re-established. Democracy will be re-established—when the people of this country can vote and elect their representatives into a government. Of course, the necessary reforms should be done so that the elections are free, fair and impartial.

He said these things at a discussion meeting titled '7th November National Revolution and Solidarity Day, Beginning of New Horizon in Democracy Transition' organized by 12 party alliance at Abdus Salam Hall of National Press Club on Thursday (November 7).

Nazrul Islamer Khan said, 'Reestablishment of democracy after the fall of fascism is the main priority. We must remember this. People's daily problems must be solved. It is normal. He who is in power has to do it – it is his duty. I repeat this government is our government. We want this government to succeed, we want to help. But I have to understand my work, I cannot announce the end of the meeting if I am the chief guest of the meeting. It's not right. Everyone should understand their work. It should also be understood what is the work of an elected government and the work of an interim government. I believe we have given the responsibility to highly qualified people. We have given the responsibility to very wise people. They will fulfill their duties properly.'

Regarding reforms, he said, 'Those who talk about reforms are not saying anything new. Because this reform has been going on for ages. We have talked about this reform many times and we also believe that this reform can be done this time, there is no such thing. Even the government that comes next, they will be able to do everything, there is no such thing. Because what we are doing today we can say after 10 years that it needs to be reformed. So reform is a continuous process. If someone thinks that we will do all the reforms, it will not happen. It can't be done.'

He also said, 'They should fulfill the responsibility of the interim government. In other words, he can do all the necessary reforms to hold a free, fair and impartial election, and to solve the daily problems of the people of the country, and to maintain the law and order situation in the country. Even if an elected government comes and advises what should be done, they can also say that.'

Regarding November 7, this BNP leader said, 'We got a new leader as a result of the November 7 change, Ziaur Rahman Bir Uttam. With his hands, we have not only created a garden of multi-party democracy on the graveyard of a one-party dictator – we have been able to stimulate the people of the country in which millions of people died in the famine of 74, to produce food. I was able to increase the production. At that time factories were closing down, not only were they opened, but we were able to build new industries. As a result of the initiative of this period, we have achieved each of the three pillars of the economy of Bangladesh today, for November 7.'

Under the chairmanship of 12-party alliance and Jatiya Party chairman Mustafa Jamal Haider, 12-party alliance coordinator Syed Ehsanul Huda, Jagpar vice-president Rashed Pradhan, Bangladesh Islamic Party secretary general Abul Kasem, Bangladesh Kalyan Party chairman Shamsuddin Parvez, Bangladesh Labor Party were also present. Chairman Md. Farooq Rahman, Secretary General of Alternative Affairs Bangladesh Advocate Shah Ahmed Badal, Secretary General of Jamiat Ulamae Islam Bangladesh Mufti Golam Mohiuddin Ikram and others.
