Kirill Dmitriev, the influential head of Russia's sovereign wealth fund, has suggested a resumption of relations between Moscow and Washington. On Wednesday (November 6), he said, after Donald Trump's victory in the US presidential election, new opportunities have been created for Russia-US relations. British news agency Reuters reported this news.
Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022 triggered the country's biggest conflict. Which created the biggest tension since the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis. At that time, the Soviet Union and the United States were close to nuclear war. Diplomats from the two countries have acknowledged that their relationship is currently at its worst, even worse than at the end of the Cold War.
Dmitriev is a key figure in Russia's political elite and head of Russia's sovereign wealth fund. He said that Trump's team has won this election and the Senate. However, a massive false campaign has been conducted against them.
He also said it shows that ordinary Americans are tired of the extraordinary lies, incompetence and hostility of the Biden administration.
He claimed that the victory created a new opportunity to restart Russia-US relations.
Dimitriev previously worked at Goldman Sachs. He previously had ties to the Trump-party and served as an adviser to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Trump, the candidate of the Republican party, has claimed to win the 2024 presidential election. His victory was seen as a stunning political comeback after Fox News announced his victory. Four years after leaving the White House, he is returning as president again.
Russia's Position in the Ukraine War
If Trump wins, he has promised to quickly end the war in Ukraine. However, he did not specify how to do so. Putin has also repeatedly said he is ready to negotiate an end to the war. But recognizing the territory occupied by Russia would be tantamount to defeat for the leadership of Ukraine. Ukraine's leaders have made it clear that this will be a capitulation on their part.
Russian forces have been advancing rapidly in Ukraine over the past year. Currently, Moscow controls about one-fifth of the country.
Trump's victory and Ukraine
Before Trump's election campaign, Russian officials said that the new leadership in the White House would not make a difference in the US elections. But a bias toward Trump has been noted in the Kremlin-run media. Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev commented on Wednesday that Trump's victory could be bad news for Ukraine. But it's unclear how much Trump will be able to cut US funding for the Ukraine war.
Trump has one virtue, Medvedev said: he is a businessman and has no value for money, especially for stupid, arrogant allies.
Medvedev also said he did not want to spend money on people he considered useless.
Medvedev hinted that the Ukrainian government might also find solace now that Trump's victory is certain. Trump has a staunch stance on domestic policy. But the question is, how much money will Trump provide for the war? He is strong, but the whole system is bigger than him.
