PM Modi and Donald Trump at the 'Namaste Trump' event organized in Ahmedabad on 24 February 2020.
“Heartfelt congratulations to my friend Donald Trump on his historic victory. We hope that we will both work together for the betterment of our people and for stability and peace in the world.” As soon as Trump's victory in the US elections was confirmed, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated him on social media.
Now the question is how will be India's relations with Trump who is returning to power with the slogan of 'Make America Great Again'.
Know in 5 points what effect Trump's presidency will have on India.
1. Trump may increase tariffs on India's exports
The effect of Trump becoming President again can be seen on India's exports. The main reason for this is that Trump has been calling India a tariff king i.e. a country that imposes high taxes on American goods.
Trump had said during the election campaign on September 17 that India is very strict in terms of import duty. If my government comes, we will change this situation and put pressure on India to reduce the tariff duty.
According to Rajan Kumar, professor of international affairs at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), if India does not reduce the tariff on American goods, then Trump can also increase the tariff on Indian goods. Because of this, Indian goods may become expensive in America. This will have a direct impact on India's exports.
There was a trade of 128.78 billion dollars i.e. about Rs 10 lakh crore between the two countries last year i.e. 2023-24. During this period, India had exported Rs 77.52 billion i.e. Rs 6 lakh crore to America.
2. H1B visa process for job can be difficult
Trump had changed the rules of H1-B visa in his first term. In the new rules, the salary for foreign employees was kept equal to that of American employees, but many conditions were also imposed on the migrant workers. Due to this, the rate of rejection of H1-B visa applications increased during Trump's first term. Due to the rules, the time to complete the visa process had also increased.
A total of 3.86 lakh immigrants were given H1-B visas in 2023, of which 2.79 lakh were Indians. Now Trump has returned, who has already described H1-B visa as very bad for the American workforce. If Trump again imposes such terms and conditions, its biggest impact will be on the Indian IT sectors, finance and other professionals, who are dependent on H-1B visas for jobs in America.
Currently there are about 51 lakh Indian immigrants in America. The number of Indian workers is the highest among all migrant workers in America. In 2021, 72% of the total NRIs aged 16 years and above were working here.
On the other hand, Trump has also had a strict attitude against immigrants entering America illegally. Last year, 29 lakh people were arrested for crossing the border illegally. Of these, 90,415 were Indians.
However, Trump has been in favor of bringing skilled labor to America. They have said that-
3. Military and Security
Defense deals like the Initiative on Critical and Emerging Technology (iCET) and GE-HL have strengthened the military ties between India and the US. These deals were done during Biden's tenure. It is expected that after Trump's return, defense relations between India and America can improve further.
China is the big reason: The QUAD alliance between India, America, Japan, and Australia was strengthened in the Indo-Pacific region during Trump's last term to check China's influence. This series of US military agreements with India may continue in the future only to stop China. It is expected that arms purchase, technology transfer and joint military exercises may accelerate in Trump's next term.
4. Pakistan, Kashmir and Bangladesh
Pakistan Regarding this, Trump had said that we want to increase relations with them. But Trump had clearly said that he will have to be held accountable for terrorism. Even during the election campaign, Trump had said – We will bring peace in the world through strength. This statement of Trump is a positive message for India on the issue of radicalism and terrorism.
kashmir Trump had refused to interfere in the matter when Section 370 was removed. He had said that this is an internal issue of India. On the other hand, Kamala Harris had said that “We have to remind Kashmiris that they are not alone in the world. We are monitoring the situation. If the situation changes, there will be a need to intervene.”
bangladesh Trump had condemned the atrocities against minority Hindus. He had said that there is violence against Hindus, Christians and other minorities in Bangladesh. They are being attacked, they are being looted. I condemn it.
5. What will be the impact on the world?
According to Professor Rajan Kumar, with Donald Trump becoming the President, he faces big challenges like Russia-Ukraine and Israel-Hamas war. Trump has already talked about bringing peace through power. Trump has been giving statements earlier also on the Russia-Ukraine war. During an interview, Trump had said that-
On the other hand, Trump's attitude on the Israel-Hamas war has been slightly different. Trump has talked about ending the war in Gaza as soon as possible. However, it is not clear whether they want to end the war through ceasefire or by eliminating Hamas.
Trump had openly supported Israel on many occasions during his previous tenure. He talked about recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel instead of Tel Aviv. Along with this, he shifted the American Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Apart from this, Trump had recognized Syria's Golan Heights as Israeli territory.
