Awami League Advisory Council member and former minister Amir Hossain Amu has been arrested by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DB). Additional Commissioner of Police (Detective) Rezaul Karim Mallik said that he was arrested from Dhanmondi area of the capital on Wednesday (November 6).
He told reporters that there are multiple murder cases against Amir Hossain Amu. He will be arrested in a case and handed over to the court for remand.
Earlier, on the night of September 29, students surrounded a building in Bashundhara of the capital, suspecting that Amir Hossain Amu was hiding. After surrounding the building for about 4 hours, not finding him, the angry vandalized the building.
Amir Hossain Amu is a former Member of Parliament from Jhalkathi-2 Constituency. In 2013, he was appointed as the Minister of Lands and Disaster Management and Relief. In the 2014 National Parliament elections, he was elected as a Member of Parliament and was appointed as the Minister of Industry.
There are allegations against him of acquiring huge amount of illegal wealth in his own name and in the name of other relatives in the country and abroad. The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) is investigating these allegations.
Recently, Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) ordered the seizure of the bank account of this Awami League leader. At the same time, he was ordered to freeze the bank accounts of his children and the businesses owned by them.
