BNP does not want Awami League to be banned – Bangladesh BNP does not want Awami League to be banned

There are demands to ban Awami League in Bangladesh. Awami League's affiliate Chhatra League has already been declared 'banned'. Since then, this claim has become stronger. Several political parties have also made this demand in a meeting with the Chief Advisor of the Interim Government of Bangladesh, Muhammad Yunus. At this time BNP announced their position. Although various parties have demanded to ban Awami League, BNP is unwilling to follow that path. Before banning Chhatra League, the interim government has clarified its position on Awami League. Mahfuz Alam, Special Assistant to Muhammad Yunus, said that the Awami League will no longer be allowed to take up political programmes. Awami League will not be allowed to participate in the polls, he said. Information and Broadcasting Adviser Nahid Islam commented that Sheikh Hasina cannot return to Bangladesh to do politics. But many political parties of Bangladesh including BNP have raised questions about why this decision will be taken.

BNP considers Awami League as 'main political enemy'. They also said that BNP does not support the demand to ban Awami League. The party leaders also said that BNP does not believe in 'ban politics'. According to Khairul Kabir Khokon, joint secretary general of the party, BNP is a liberal political democratic party. They do not want Awami League to be banned. Along with this, he said, 'BNP wants all opponents to participate in the election. We don't want to score in an empty field. The people are on our side. We are not afraid.' Khairul Kabir also said that BNP believes in human rights and fundamental rights of people.

Earlier, former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's son Sajib Wazed Joy said that they want to participate in the next election. He also said that elections and reforms in Bangladesh are not possible without Awami League.
