It will take 31 years to implement our 31 points: Gayeshwar

Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, a member of the BNP's standing committee, said that it will take 31 years to implement the 31-point reforms proposed by us. May take more. Because planting a tree will take time to produce.

He said these things at a discussion meeting titled 'Role of BNP on the occasion of International Disaster Mitigation Day' organized by Jatiyabatadi Prakha Dal at Zahur Hossain Chowdhury Hall of Jatiya Press Club on Sunday (October 13).

So much bloodshed for a free and fair election

Addressing the interim government, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy said, 'One demand of the last 16 years is free and fair elections – nothing else. This is why so much bleeding. People's desire for suffrage – that's your only agenda. There is no need to have any other agenda. Give a nice selection. Still you have not been able to change the form of Election Commission itself. The people could have sent the Election Commission to the grave by now. But they are patient. You have to form commission after commission. After one, another commission has to be done. Discussions with political parties are just time killing, nothing more. The point is that the sooner the elections are held, the greater will be the participation of the people. If the election is held right now, then 90 percent of the people will appear to vote, breaking the past record of Bangladesh.

He said, 'This country has a tradition of student movement. Students play a role in every significant change in the country. That is why people demand more for them. I used to say sometimes, if the students had participated in our movement, then the Awami League government would not have lasted more than five to seven days. But we couldn't build confidence, nor did our environment allow student participation. But BNP as a political party was next to every movement of the students.

Who will pay if another discrimination is created under the cover of anti-discrimination?

Gayeshwar Chandra Roy said, 'We think of students as the crown of their heads. The crown should be in the crown position. Today, from the anti-quota movement to the people's suffrage movement, the movement of students and political parties is not in conflict. But the current government wants to see them separately why? Why do you want to separate them? Why would students still roam around the secretariat? If there is any irregularity, they will do press-briefing, warn the government, warn. We also share such traditions in student life. But we finished the movement and went to our library. Today you will not separate and create division. If another discrimination is created under the cover of anti-discrimination, then it is not possible to say in advance who will pay the fee and how it will be paid.

This leader of the BNP Standing Committee also said, 'Your responsibility is to have a fair election. The election will be done by issuing an ordinance through the President to make the necessary changes or reforms.'

It is not right to think politicians are stupid

Mentioning that it is not right to think of politicians as fools, Gayeshwar said, 'You are full of knowledge, you are respected people of the society. For this reason, the responsibility has been assigned to you. So respect you, you deserve respect. But we who are politicians – it is not right to think them stupid. It will not be right to think of them as selfish. You have knowledge, you study science but the implementation is done by politicians, workers, rickshaw pullers. Reality and thought are not the same thing. You can create a paradise in your mind, but you have to stumble step by step to implement it.'

Addressing the interim government, he said, 'If you fail, the nation will fail. Your failure means our 16-year movement has failed. So we want to see the government succeed. We are and will continue to give you full support. Make it clear to the people that you will make an election and for how long. How much time will it take? Earlier the army man said 18 months. But the next day why the government said it is not the government's business. So where is the government? 36 months or 20 months? Don't say… you have to say. You have to fix the time.'

People will go elsewhere if they don't vote on time

Gayeshwar said, 'We hope people's stomach hunger, mind hunger, thought hunger will cast a vote in an election. If it is not done in time, people will go elsewhere.'

President of the Nationalist Propaganda Party Mahfuz Kabir Mukta presided over the discussion meeting, BNP Chairperson's Advisor Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal, Joint Secretary General Advocate Abdus Salam Azad, Volunteer Secretary Mir Sarfat Ali Sapu and others spoke as chief negotiators.
