Relations between the two Asian giants had deteriorated significantly after the fierce clash in Galwan Valley in June 2020.

Putin was seated between PM Modi and President Xi Jinping during the BRICS gala dinner. This signals a shift towards closer diplomatic relations between the three countries. Modi and Xi Jinping last met in Mamallapuram in October 2019, months before the border standoff began.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar had met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Kazakhstan on July 4 and ASEAN-related meetings in Laos on July 25. National Security Advisor Ajit Doval also met Wang at the BRICS meeting in St. Petersburg on September 12.
