'Nobody can wipe out Jatiya Party at will'

Secretary General of Jatiya Party. Mujibul Haque Chunnu said, we want balance of power. Want to reform the law — so that a prime minister can't do whatever he wants. We want to reform the Election Commission Act. The Election Commission should be given that power so that the Commission can exercise its powers during the election period. He said, we want fair elections, the acceptance we have among the people will be proved in the next elections.

Mujibul Haque Chunnu said this in the president's speech at the discussion meeting organized on the occasion of Upazila System Introduction Day at Jatiya Party Chairman Banani's office auditorium on Wednesday (October 23).

He said that 25 years ago Hussain Muhammad Ershad formally demanded proportional elections at Hotel Intercontinental, after so long almost all parties are thinking of proportional elections. The selection process must be changed. Fair elections are not possible with the existing system.

He said, he did not call us for dialogue, it is the jurisdiction of the interim government. If we ask for help, Jatiya Party is ready. In 2010, I made a proposal in the parliament on the law on the appointment of judges. The Select Committee recommended the passage of the Act. But, the Awami League government did not pass the law.

By virtue of Article 116 of the Constitution, the President can control the appointment and transfer of judges of subordinate courts. This power must be abolished. Article 70 of the Constitution should be repealed so that elected members of Parliament can exercise their right to vote independently in making laws. He said, we will strengthen the Upazila Parishad again. We want a strong Upazila Parishad like in 1983/84.

Mujibul Haque Chunnu also said that Pallibandhu Hussain Muhammad Ershad, the late president and founder of Jatiya Party, made a revolutionary change in the Ghunedhra society of Bangladesh. Hussain Muhammad Ershad created 364 Upazila Parishads in the country through hundreds of adversities. By appointing 18 first-class officials including 3 expert doctors in Upazila Parishad, he succeeded in delivering state services to the people's doorsteps. The late eminent doctor Dr. Zafrullah Chowdhury gave the drug policy, the people of the country are now getting quality drugs at low prices. Bangladesh is now exporting medicine to more than hundred countries.
