According to Bangladeshi news The Daily Star, thousands of people gathered in front of Rashtrapati Bhavan in the capital Dhaka. They were angry with his statement regarding Sheikh Hasina's resignation.
The protesters said that the President has lost his moral right to remain in office. He demanded the President to step down within 2 days. Seeing the crowd of protesters becoming angry, the police resorted to lathi charge and fired tear gas shells. At least 5 people have been injured in the stampede. He has been admitted to the hospital.
Police said that the protesters started pelting stones at them, so they took strict action. President Shahabuddin had said in an interview on Sunday-
I just heard that Sheikh Hasina has resigned from the post of Prime Minister. But I do not have any evidence related to his resignation. I had tried many times to get his resignation but perhaps he did not have time for it.
Leaders of the student movement had come to pacify the protesters. He has asked for an extension of 2 days.
Student leader said – President will be removed in 2 days According to Dhaka Tribune, seeing the growing opposition to President Shahabuddin's statement, two leaders associated with the movement, Hasnat Abdullah and Sarjis Alam, reached the protesters on Tuesday night. He appealed to the people to leave from there. Student leaders promised the people that there would be a major change in power in the country in two days.
Student leader Hasnat said he would talk to political parties in the presence of the army chief and by Thursday select someone who could become the president. He said that if the new President is not elected by Thursday, he will take to the streets with the people.
