Floods in Greater Mymensingh and Northern Region: BNP's 6 point demand


Senior Joint Secretary General of BNP Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed said that a few days ago there was a catastrophic flood in the eastern part of the country. Then between the end of last month and the first week of October, Greater Mymensingh and various areas in the northern region were inundated with heavy floods. Millions of people have been trapped in water, the suffering has increased to an extreme level. Experts have expressed the opinion that the flood was caused by the monsoon rains and the upstream hill slopes.

He said these things in a press conference held in Nayapaltan of the capital on Sunday (October 20). At this time, Ruhul Kabir Rizvi made a six-point demand for flood prevention.

The demands are:

1. To provide full relief assistance to those whose land crops have been destroyed by flood water, making a proper list until the next crop grows; Providing interest-free agricultural loans for the next crop and provision of free fertilizers, seeds, pesticides, irrigation oil; Providing them with rabi seeds for rabi crop production before next crop.

2. Accurate inventory of all fish, poultry, livestock farms destroyed by flood waters and fish, poultry livestock destroyed and damage assessment and provision of interest-free loans and other assistance for re-establishment of farms.

3. Assist in the rebuilding of houses by listing those whose houses have been partially or completely destroyed by flood waters; Villages-paras-mahallas that have been destroyed by river dams are currently displaced, shifting them to government-owned land or shelter projects.

4. Renovation and reconstruction of damaged dams, roads, mosques, madrasas, temples including partial or full religious and educational institutions.

5. Providing educational materials and support to the students whose educational materials have been destroyed in the flood water.

6. As soon as the flood waters recede, providing free medical treatment in government hospitals for the disease-afflicted people, setting up area-based medical camps if necessary and providing treatment.

Rizvi said, 'Wide areas of Mymensingh, Sherpur, Jamalpur and Netrakona districts were inundated with flood water. In Mymensingh division, the water of Sameswari rivers including Kangsa, Jinjiram, old Brahmaputra rivers overflowed and submerged the surrounding areas. Bhogai river in Sherpur district, river water in Nakuagaon and Jamalpur district has flowed above the danger level.
