Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping will hold a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in the Russian city of Kazan on Wednesday (October 23). Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri has confirmed this on Tuesday. This will be the first meeting between the two leaders after the border dispute. News agency ANI has confirmed this quoting Misri. “I can say that there will be a bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the BRICS summit tomorrow,” Misri told ANI.

This will be the first meeting between the two leaders after the standoff between India and China on the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh. However, just a day before, both the countries have reached a consensus regarding patrolling on LAC. This is considered a major success in ending the ongoing military standoff between the two countries. This is the first time since 2019 that there will be bilateral talks between the two leaders.

Let us tell you that earlier on Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held bilateral talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in Kazan. During this, Prime Minister Modi said in his conversation with Putin that the Russia-Ukraine conflict should be resolved peacefully and India is ready to provide all possible support for this. In his televised opening remarks, Prime Minister Modi told Putin that India “fully supports” the early restoration of peace and stability in the region.

Modi also said his second visit to Russia in the last three months reflects the “close” rapport and deep trust between the two countries. The Prime Minister said, “We are in constant touch on the issue of the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. As I said earlier, we believe that problems should be resolved peacefully.'' After this, PM Modi met Iranian President Masoud Pejeshkian. Amid rising tensions between Iran and Israel, Pejeshkian stressed the need for peace in West Asia and India's role in reducing conflict due to its good relations with all parties.

This is the first meeting between Pejeshkian and Modi, who became President after winning the elections in July. The two leaders discussed ways to strengthen cooperation in key areas including Chabahar Port and the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC). Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri told a press conference here that there was a “meaningful discussion” between Modi and Pejeshkian. (with language inputs)
