A division bench of Chief Justice MS Ramachandra Rao and Justice Deepak Roshan accepted the CBI's plea and said the investigation has been completed in all aspects. No element of any deep conspiracy has come to light, hence the petition should be disposed of.

Judge Uttam Anand was murdered in Dhanbad on 28 July 2021. He was walking near Randhir Verma Chowk at 5 am when he was hit by an auto-rickshaw, in which the driver was carrying a passenger in the front. CCTV footage showed that a motorcyclist riding behind the auto-rickshaw saw the judge fall to the ground but did not help. Judge Uttam Anand was later taken to the hospital, where he died.

The FIR was registered 12 hours after the incident. The police had told the then bench that evidence had also been collected from other CCTV footage and the auto-rickshaw had been seized. In August 2021, the case was handed over to the CBI, which arrested two accused, Rahul Verma and Laxman Verma, who have now been convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment.
