Karhal assembly seat of Mainpuri is one of the strongest strongholds of Samajwadi Party. SP President Akhilesh Yadav was the MLA from this seat. After winning the election from Kannauj Lok Sabha seat, he resigned, after which this seat has become vacant and now by-election is being held here. Akhilesh Yadav has placed his bet on his nephew Tej Pratap Yadav from this seat. BJP has also been fighting for this seat for months but has not announced the name of the candidate till now.

Will BJP be able to break through SP fort?
Karhal assembly seat has been continuously held by SP since 1993. SP's Babu Ram Yadav has been MLA from here twice, Sobran Singh Yadav four times and Akhilesh Yadav himself once. The caste and political equation of this seat is also such that it makes SP the strongest here. Karhal seat, surrounded by districts like Etawah, Etah and Firozabad, is very close to Saifai. The Yadav family has influence in this entire area.

In the last few years, BJP has also expanded its organization here. In the last two elections, BJP gave a direct competition to SP and stood second. BJP has formed a committee at every booth here. This time too the party has used its full strength and is looking for such a formula by which the stronghold of SP can be demolished. On this seat, the names of Union Minister SP Singh Baghel's daughter Saloni Baghel and former MP Sanghamitra Maurya are running from BJP's side.

Karhal's caste equation
Talking about Karhal seat, Yadav voters play a decisive role here. According to media reports, the total number of voters in Karhal is 3,75,000. These include 1,30,000 Yadavs, 60,000 Scheduled Castes, 50,000 Shakyas, 30,000 Thakurs, 30,000 Baghels, 25,000 Muslims, 20,000 Lodhis, 20,000 Brahmins and 15,000 Vaishya voters.
