Justice Sanjiv Khanna, the second senior most judge of the Supreme Court, will be the next Chief Justice of the country. Current Chief Justice DY Chandrachud has recommended the Central Government to make Justice Khanna the next CJI. If the Central Government accepts this recommendation, Justice Khanna will take over as CJI on November 10. Current Justice Chandrachud is retiring on the same day. Justice Khanna's tenure will be till May 23, 2025. That means he will remain on this post for about six and a half months.

The central government, under established rules, had last Friday requested the CJI to suggest the name of his successor. In response to this, Chief Justice Chandrachud has made this recommendation. Justice Sanjiv Khanna is known for his impartiality and legal scholarship in the Indian judiciary. Before being elevated to the Supreme Court, he had been a judge of the Delhi High Court. He was made a judge of the Supreme Court on January 18, 2019. Justice Khanna is the nephew of former Supreme Court judge Justice Hansraj Khanna.

Born in Delhi

Justice Sanjeev Khanna was born on 14 May 1960. The CJI's father Justice Dev Raj Khanna also retired as a judge of the Delhi High Court. His mother Saroj Khanna was a lecturer in LSR DU. It is from here that he completed his school education. Took graduation degree from Delhi University in the year 1980. After this he took admission in law from DU.

This is how it started

After completing his law studies, he enrolled as an advocate in the Bar Council of Delhi in 1983. Initially started practice in Tis Hazari campus of Delhi. After this, practiced in various fields in Delhi High Court.

Was appointed to Delhi High Court in 2005

In the year 2005, he was appointed as an Additional Judge of Delhi High Court. After this, permanent judges were made in the year 2006.

Appointed to the Supreme Court in the year 2019

He was elevated as a judge of the Supreme Court of India on January 18, 2019, after serving as a judge in the High Court from 2006 to 2019.

The appointment was surrounded by controversy

According to media reports, when Justice Sanjeev Khanna was elevated to the Supreme Court in January 2019, his appointment had created controversy. In fact, despite other judges senior to him in age and experience, he was directly appointed to the Supreme Court.

Uncle has also been a judge

According to media reports, apart from Sanjeev Khanna's father, his uncle Hansraj Khanna has also been a judge of the Supreme Court. His uncle had given many important decisions. Apart from this, his father was a judge in the Delhi High Court.
