Arab Finance – The Petroleum Authority is expanding the implementation of projects using solar energy in production wells to replace diesel


Arab Finance: The Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation has successfully implemented a number of projects Using solar energy instead of diesel In the operations of operating wells for petroleum production at the sites of the companies Norpetco and Petro Farah in the Western Sahara and Osoko in the Eastern Desert, within the framework of implementing the priorities of the work program of the Ministry of Petroleum, which was announced by Engineer Karim Badawi, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, before Parliament, which emphasized the reduction of emissions and the transformation of energy in petroleum sites.

The projects, whose implementation was supervised by a committee of specialists at the Petroleum Authority, commissioned by geologist Alaa Al-Batal, CEO of the Authority, included using solar energy solutions to operate artificial lift pumps in wells in light of the vision prepared by the committee with the aim of expanding this type of project, which is characterized by high returns and economic indicators. It saves the cost of diesel consumption by about 4.3 million pounds annually as a total savings from these projects, enabling it to recover the cost of investment in these projects within a year and a half to less than two years, in addition to the environmental benefit of reducing amounts of emissions as a result of replacing diesel with clean, renewable energy, so that an average Emissions that were reduced in the three projects to more than 420 tons annually of carbon dioxide, so the Petroleum Authority places the expansion of the implementation of solar energy projects in wells among its priorities, due to the positive effects it has on the economic and environmental aspects, and environmental impact assessment and carbon emissions.
