Sister and sister-in-law were hacked to death in a dispute over a pond

A man named Mohibul Islam Ohid hacked his sister Josna Khatun (52) and sister-in-law Zakyul Ilma (42) to death in Shanghat village of Gangni upazila in Meherpur. The murder happened on Saturday (October 12) afternoon due to a land dispute. Mohibul's brother Zahid Hossain and sister Shamima Khatun (32) were injured in the same incident.

The deceased Zakyul Ilma was an assistant teacher of Gangni Model Government Primary School. Mohibul Islam Ohid fled after the incident. He is the Executive Director of an NGO called Shanghat Palli Development Organization.

According to local sources, Mohibul Islam Ohid of Shanghat village had a dispute with his elder brother Zahid Hossain and three sisters over the ownership of ancestral land. Mohibul Islam Ohid alone has been occupying a pond of about one and a half acres of land and has been doing fish farming. Two brothers and three sisters were discussing sharing the pond since morning. At one point, quarrels and arguments started between them. At this time, Mohibul Islam Ohid attacked his brothers and sisters with sharp weapons. Sister Josna Khatun and elder brother's wife Zakyul Ilma were killed on the spot.

Mohibul's brother Zahid Hossain and younger sister Shamima were admitted to Gangni Upazila Health Complex with serious injuries. Resident Medical Officer of Gangni Upazila Health Complex, Abdul Al Maruf, said that they have been referred to Kushtia Medical College Hospital as their physical condition is critical.

Kudrat-e-Hafiz, the husband of deceased Josna Khatun, who witnessed the incident, said that there is a dispute between the three brothers regarding the distribution of land. Mohibul Islam Ohid occupies a pond of 1 acre of 28th century land next to his house. Everyone sat together today to decide the share of brothers and sisters. At one point, Mahibul is angry with a sharp weapon. Two people died on the spot. Two people were injured.

Gangni Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Tajul Islam said that the process of sending the body for post-mortem is underway after visiting the scene. Police have started work to arrest Mohibul Islam Ohid, the killer of sister and brother-in-law.
