Egypt renews the sugar export ban for 6 months

The Egyptian government renewed the ban on sugar exports for a period of 6 months, starting on October 7, according to an official document seen by Al-Sharq.

This is the sixth time that the government has taken a decision to ban the export of sugar abroad, as it issued its first decision in this regard in March 2023 for a period of 3 months, and renewed the decision 5 times for additional periods ranging from 3 to 6 months, the last of which was on Tuesday, when the implementation of the decision to ban the export was extended. Sugar for an additional six months.

Egypt's sugar production reaches 2.8 million tons annually, while consumption exceeds 3.2 million tons, and the government imports the difference from abroad in cooperation with the private sector. There are 16 large sugar production companies in the most populous Arab country, 8 of which are government companies, through which sugar is mainly imported from abroad to compensate for the shortage in the market.
