37 crore girls of the world have been raped before reaching adulthood, UNICEF report reveals.

The latest report released regarding half of the world's population i.e. women has revealed shocking figures. International Girl Child Day is being celebrated on Friday to highlight the rights of girls and the challenges they face across the world. New UNICEF estimates show that 370 million women, or 37 crore girls, have been victims of rape or sexual assault before the age of 18. When 'non-contact' forms of sexual violence, such as online or verbal abuse, are included, the number of affected girls and women rises to 650 million globally. That means 1 out of every 5 teenage girls is a victim of violence.

The report emphasizes the need to effectively address violence and abuse and take immediate action. Speaking about the report, UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell said, “Sexual violence against children is a stain on our moral conscience. It often causes deep and lasting trauma to the child. Many times it occurs in places where it would Should feel safe.”

The number of victims is highest in Africa, where 79 million girls and women are affected. The number of victims is 75 million in East and South-East Asia, 73 million in Central and Southern Asia, 68 million in Europe and North America, 45 million in Latin America and the Caribbean. Research shows that victims often struggle with the trauma of sexual violence for many years. At the same time, conditions like sexually transmitted diseases, alcohol or drugs, social isolation and depression are also serious threats to mental health.
