Counting of votes for the presidency continues in America. In the results so far, Democrat candidate Joe Biden is leading and Trump is far behind. If US President Donald Trump fails to win the election for a second consecutive term, he will be the first president in the last three decades to lose the next election while in office.

In fact, in the year 1992, George H.W. Bush failed to win his second term because Democrat Bill Clinton won the election. Since Bush, all three US presidents—Bill Clinton, George W. Bush (Jr.), and Barack Obama—have won re-election. Whereas in the last 100 years, only four presidents have lost elections contested for a second consecutive term.

George H.W. Bush: The 1992 presidential election defeated the Republican Party's long-term rule in the United States, which began in 1968. Bush's approval rating was 89% and his reelection was considered certain, but Clinton also won 370 Electoral College votes with 43 percent of the popular vote.

Jimmy Carter: Democrat Jimmy Carter lost to Republican Ronald Reagan in the 1980 US election. It was a landslide victory for Reagan, as he won 50.7 percent of the popular vote. Reagan, then 69, was the oldest president until 70-year-old Donald Trump was elected president in 2016.

Gerald Ford: In 1976, Republican Gerald Rudolph Ford was defeated by Democrat Jimmy Carter. When President Richard Nixon resigned in 1974 following the Watergate scandal, Vice President Ford was made president. Thus he became the only President who was never elected by the Electoral College.

herbert hoover : Republican Herbert Hoover was defeated by Democrat Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1932. It was a landslide victory for Roosevelt, as the election took place during the Great Depression.

What is the status of results now?

Even after two days of elections, no candidate has been able to secure the required number of votes to register victory. But after winning in the decisive states of Wisconsin and Michigan, Biden has reached the figure of 264. Donald Trump has got 214 electoral college votes. However, the path for the current President is quite tough as Trump will have to win the four remaining 'battleground' states of Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Georgia and Nevada to reach the magic figure of 270. Battlegrounds are those states where the trend is not clear. A clear victory requires at least 270 Electoral College votes out of 538 Electoral College members to emerge as the winner.
