According to a report in Bangladesh's The Business Standard, the finance ministry has sent a request for a new design for the notes just last month.
On September 29, a letter signed by Elish Sharmin, Deputy Secretary of the Treasury and Debt Management Department of the Finance Department, was sent to Bangladesh Bank. It has been asked to send a proposal as soon as possible as to how the design of the new note will be. After that, several officials of the bank and finance ministry think that Bangabandhu's picture may be removed from all the notes there. According to them, there was no need to print new design notes if Mujib's picture was to be kept.
It should be noted that, currently, all banknotes of Bangladesh starting from 2 taka to 1000 taka have Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's picture. Bangabandhu's image is also on the metal coins. It is learned that right before Sheikh Hasina left the country in August, she was asked to print Mujib's picture more clearly on the 500 and 1000 rupee notes. The Finance Ministry also wrote to Bangladesh Bank to change the printing method of Rs 20 and Rs 100 notes. It was suspended only after the fall of Hasina's government.
It is known that after receiving a letter from the Ministry of Finance, Bangladesh Bank has asked for six months to submit the new design of the notes. Four can be designed for each note. An official also said that it may take around 2 years for the new notes to hit the market after approval. Earlier, the governor of Bangladesh Bank did not give any answer to the question whether the note containing Bangabandhu's photo will be changed or not. Ahsan H. Mansoor.
