According to a report in the Bangladeshi newspaper 'Kale Kantha', about 2,000 prisoners escaped from prisons during the uprising. They escaped from 5 prisons. Kargars were looted from weapons, ammunition to rice and pulses. At that time, 13 prisoners were shot dead by the prison guards. Clashes also occurred while trying to stop them. 282 prison guards were injured. Inspector General of Prisons Brigadier General Syed Mohammad Motaher Hossain said that about 500 prisoners are still absconding.

According to the sources of the prison department of Bangladesh, the first incident of this rebellion took place in Narsingdi prison during the anti-discrimination movement. The agitators attacked the prison on July 19. A fire was also set there. On that day, 826 prisoners escaped from that prison, including the accused militants. They fled with firearms and bullets. Later many of them returned again.

Also, prisoners escaped from Kashimpur Jail in Satkhira, Sherpur and Gazipur. Among them, 6 prisoners were shot dead by prison guards while escaping from high security in Kashimpur. According to a report by Kale Kantha newspaper, eight out of 17 jails were heavily damaged during the agitation.

During that time, 98 militants and death row prisoners escaped from various prisons. Nine of them were convicted militants. So far around 70 under-trial militants are absconding. 27 weapons looted from the prison are yet to be recovered. The Inspector General of Prisons said that a police operation is underway to recover these firearms.
