Inspector General of Prisons Brigadier General Syed Mohammad Motaher Hossain said that about 500 prisoners are still absconding.

According to the sources of the prison department of Bangladesh, the first incident of this rebellion took place in Narsingdi prison during the anti-discrimination movement. The agitators attacked the prison on July 19. A fire was also set there. On that day, 826 prisoners escaped from that prison, including the accused militants. They fled with firearms and bullets. During that time, 98 militants and death row prisoners escaped from various prisons. Nine of them were convicted militants. So far around 70 under-trial militants are absconding. 27 weapons looted from the prison are yet to be recovered. The Inspector General of Prisons said that a police operation is underway to recover these firearms.
